Target begins taking Pre-Orders for "Backspacer"

If you want to pre-order from another outlet other than the ten club site, you can pre-order from Target. Here's the article from Mel Duncan at The Pearl Jam Examiner
Love Pearl Jam but suffer from agoraphobia or some other crippling social disorder that would disable you from buying Backspacer the day of it’s release? No worries, as a member of the Ten Club, Pearl Jam’s official fan club, you can - - huh? What? You’re not a member?
Okay, good news then. Now, on Target’s site, you can put in your order for Backspacer, Pearl Jam’s upcoming ninth studio album, for $11.98 plus $2.99 shipping. As previously reported, Target customers will get two full concert downloads (out of 12, of which the band hasn’t made public their selections).
The bummer here is that it looks like Target won't be carrying the vinyl version. For that, you would have to join the fan club.
Shoppers can also pick up a Target exclusive Pearl Jam t-shirt, but the price or design is not available yet.

Ever wondered if Eddie Vedder does Karaoke??? Well, wonder no more.
Ever go to sing Karaoke with friends? I have and it takes a bit of "liquid courage" to get up there and pick your favorite song and try to pull it off without looking like a dork.
Well, I recently so this on The Red Mosquito Forum (theskyiscrape.com's fourm) of Eddie doing karaoke after a Cubs game. I didn't believe it. So I click it and sure enough, it's our favorite frontman, singing U2's Where the Streets Have No Name", The Beatles, "Yellow Submarine" and Sonny and Cher's "I got You Babe". Here's the link to the video of the U2 song:
EDDIE VEDDER DOES KARAOKE
This is classic. I think was feeling pretty good!

Buying the New Album at Target... it may be worth
It may be worth buying the new album from target
from Billboard.com article
The Target discs will link to a virtual "vault" of 11 concerts spanning Pearl Jam's career, from which fans can choose two. The band will also create an organic cotton T-shirt to be sold at Target, with proceeds earmarked for the hunger relief charity Feeding America. And in September, a Cameron Crowe-directed TV ad will air featuring footage shot during a private performance at Seattle's Showbox in late May.

UPDATE: Pearl Jam NOT replacing Beastie Boys at All Points West concert
reported by Hudson Reporter.com
The organizers of the All Points West concerts in Jersey City are looking for a replacement headliner for the Beastie Boys. It'd have to be something that appeals to Gen X and has the same level of street cred.
On the APW message board, fans are batting around bands like Pearl Jam, the Killers, Sonic Youth (who have local roots), Kanye West, 2 nights of Tool (instead of one), the Cure, Wilco, Beck, and Kings of Leon.
UPDATE: NY Times reporting that Jay-Z will be replacing Beastie boys at APW. Sorry, PJ fans in Jersey City.

Given To Cast... now on Twitter
Yes, that's right. Given To Cast is now on Twitter. I've had this account for awhile now, but really didn't used it. B gave me the idea and I'm gonna use it to reach as many Pearl Jam fans as I can. So if you want to subscribe to Given To Cast on Twitter just click on the sidebar where it says "TWITTER UPDATES" or go to www.twitter.com/giventocast and you can leave me a TWEET... I think that's right?
Thanks New subscribers
Hey guys,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of our new subscribers who join up yesterday. Over 80 people joined in less than 24 hours. That's HUGE for this podcast.
I wanted to give a special shout out to B from The Sky I Scrape. He took it upon himself to post my contest on his front page and I know it was because of him that this podcast has so many new listeners. So I thank you, Brandon for the help.
I will post tomorrow what the decal will look like for ALL the winners and I will post the "SPECIAL" 25 winners decal that is just for them and I'll post their names too.
On the podcast front, I have decided to add a few things to the show so I will be editing today and adding news and such. I hope to have it up by tomorrow. Thanks again and decals will be heading your way.

Backspacer release date changed to Sept. 20
Hey guys,
It seems that Pearl Jam is really going against the grain of the music industry and have decided to release their ninth studio album, "Backspacer" on a Sunday instead of the industry standard day of a Tuesday release date. If you want to buy it in your hometown, you're gonna have to go to your nearest Target to get it on Sept 20. Another reason may be they want to get the album into their hometown fans' hands before they hit the stage in Seattle, WA on Sept 21 and the start of their North American tour. Who knows, but I hope it works for them. I hearing great things about it.
BTW, when they release their first single, "The Fixer" on July 20, I'll be including it on my podcast and will release the podcast.
Also, thanks to everyone that subscribed to my podcast. If you did yesterday, you should've received an email from stating you won. If you didn't receive an email, please email at mario@giventocast.com

Looks like Pearl Jam will be adding tour dates soon
Hey guys,
Hope evryone had a great July 4th weekend. I sure did. I started it out with a little Pearl Jam touring news. Here's what Kat said at the Ten Club forum:
As the sun was setting in the west, we had a visit from a little birdie who seemed like he was in a great hurry.
“Where are you going?” we asked. He said, “I have to pack my bags and saddle up my horse."
"Birds have bags?" we questioned.
With eyes wide the bird stared at us stupefied for a few minutes and then said, "Tweet!"
"Just be sure your fan club memberships/addresses are up to date by July 7 at midnight PT.” said the bird as he flew off heading east tweeting “mmmm Cheesesteaks, and soon Vegemite ... tweet”
I guess that means you guys in Philly and Australia are getting added to the upcoming tour. I am still hoping that Pearl Jam will still tour Texas (" ...and saddle up my horse." reference) but it seems that notion is looking less likely now. Thank God for Austin and ACL!!!
I'll add the dates once we get them.

More on the Target/Pearl Jam commerical
I found an article from billboard that has an interview with Kelly Curtis, longtime manager for the band. Here it is:
From Billboard.com
Exclusive: Pearl Jam Confirms Target Tie-Up
Pearl Jam was indeed recording a Target commercial under the direction of Cameron Crowe last week at Seattle's Showbox theater, Billboard can confirm. But there's more to the story than an exclusive retail relationship
While it has been known that Pearl Jam are no longer under contract after 18 years of recording for Sony-affiliated labels, there has been only speculation about who would release their next album and how. Kelly Curtis, who has managed Pearl Jam since day one, conducted a wide-ranging interview with Billboard on Sunday night, confirming that the band's next release - rumored to be called "Backspacer" and currently scheduled for an early fall release - would come without a U.S. label, but a consortium of partners, including Target as the "big box" retail partner.
"We'll have a lot of partners," said Curtis, who confirmed that deals were also finished or in the works with an online retailer, a mobile partner, a gaming company and with a network or possibly networks of indie retail stores. "Target ended up allowing us to have other partners. We'll be able to take care of all levels of the Pearl Jam fan...We wish we could tell the whole story right now, but all the deals aren't done. Target was cool enough to realize that little independent record stores are not their competition." Curtis was also quick to note that the album would be for sale via Pearl Jam's fan club, Ten Club.
News of the Target commercial taping first broke last week on antiquiet.com, which is also hosting a bootleg recording from the Target taping of a song that Curtis confirmed was called "The Fixer." While a first single hasn't been definitively chosen from the new album yet, the song is in the running. An official first single will likely be released in July.
Curtis said that the Target commercial was only one reason for the Showbox session; with singer Eddie Vedder on tour supporting his solo work for the next month, "we had a narrow window to get some footage," says Curtis. "We shot three or four songs that night." Curtis said that some of the footage may be used for a project that Cameron Crowe is working on in connection to the band's 20th anniversary.
Pearl Jam will play at least one new song tonight on the debut of "The Tonight Show" with Conan O'Brien. "That was booked months ago," said Curtis. "We didn't even know if the album was going to be finished when we booked it. It isn't like we're releasing a single after the show or anything." And while blogs are rampant with speculation that the band will play "The Fixer," Curtis said the band was still kicking around "two or three songs, all of them new" to perform.
Curtis also confirmed that the band would tour to support this latest album, and that internationally, the album would be released via Universal Music Group.
"I make decisions around the band's business that are consistent with their overall philosophy," said Curtis, "which is to sell music in a way that's accessible and affordable to their fans, on every distribution platform that their fans access music, and in a way that takes care of the little guys.
Everyone's making assumptions because Target is a big corporation," said Curtis. "Its important to remember we just got out of this 18 year relationship with Sony, and I'm pretty sure they are a bigger corporation than Target. We have the freedom to pick our partners and more control when we've ever had before. We're excited to choose who we're in business with."
Curtis says it was important to him and to the band to redefine the notion of an "exclusive" retail partnership. "I appreciate the efforts of bands like AC/DC and Radiohead," says the manager, alluding to two of the bands that have self-released albums recently. "But I wanted our plan to be multi-dimensional to address old and modern ways of fans accessing music. It will allow all of our fans to have the same access."
"This is an ongoing experiment," said Curtis. "Every time we do something it's new for us, and were not trying to tackle the whole world at once. All we've been searching for forever is independence and control over our own stuff. The way of releasing records is changing every day. This is the best way we could do it ourselves in America. Right or wrong, we'll figure that out and make it better the next time."

Pearl Jam make a commercial for Target? Not really. Let me explain
It seems that the world is coming to an end. Not only are icons dropping like flies, i.e. Farrah Faucett, Michael Jackson, but now the day that I thought I'd never see will be here soon. No, not my 40th birthday. Pearl Jam has made a commercial for a major corporation. I hear they have already filmed it, with Cameron Crowe directing. Well,if you have to make a commercial, it's always good to get a great director.
Now, I know what you're thinking right about now. "It's not like they are hawking hamburgers or cars. They're trying to sell an album." I know. I know. I guess I never wanted to see them go so mainstream.
But the more I think about it the more I can understand them having to do it. For the first time, they won't have a major label to help sell their new CD, "Backspacer". They have to do it themselves. This could be a very interesting thing to watch when you think about it. Not alot big names have done this to sell their latest album. The only other I can think of is Prince.
I think this helps both parties. The band gets their album in front on people that they may not otherwise have access to and the big box store gets exclusive rights to sell the CD. They like the money part (like I had to point that out to you).
I guess the jury will be out until September but I think Prince moved alot CD's when he sold his CD exclusivly and i think it hit number 1. What do ya think?

New Pearl Jam songs on Rock Band
If you're a fan of Rock Band and PJ like myself, then you're gonna love that Pearl Jam has decided to release a whole game of 50+ Pearl Jam songs. But if you can't wait 'til 2010, you can download a bundle of three songs from the rock band website. The songs include “Brother,” a live version of “Alive” and a live version of “State of Love and Trust.” The live versions are taken fron the "Drop in the Park" CD. It’ll run you 2 bucks if you buy each song separately, or $5.50 if you pick up the bulk of ‘em.

Pallin' around with hate
Hey guys,
Just wanted to post another video from Brave New Films about all the hate talk coming from McCain/Palin rallies.
UPDATED: This is another video from a campaign rally. It's just shos how ignorant and misinformed you can be if all you do is watch FOX News or listen to all right wing radio.
This video was put together before we got word that two Obama supporters at a Palin rally got punched in the face and body by some Palin supporters. They were escorted out of the rally and as a result, filed a police report. More to come.

Keating Economics - What john McCain wants you to forget
Hey guys,
I just wanted to post a documentry on John McCain and Charles Keating. Please take the time to watch this 13 min film. It explains how John McCain was involved with the S&L scandal and eventual collapse. He and Sarah Palin want to "turn the page" on this economic crisis and resort to smearing and "swift-boating" their way into the white house. Don't fall for that. Watch this film and share it with everyone you know. Here's the film:

It's time to speak up
Hey guys,
I know that I have neglected this blog for a whle now and I promise that I will get back to this podcast as soon as this political season is over. I have been spending my free time volunteering for the Obama Campaign. This is a very inportant time in our nation's history and if you plan on being here for the next 4 to 8 years, you owe it to yourself and your kids to get involved. I have it hard here in Texas. Not only has Pearl Jam skipped over us for the last 4 years (I know they'll be back soon!!!LOL) but I also live in a state that will probably go to the Republicans.
I have struggled to be able to get another view on politics out to the local public but there not much of an outlet to do that here. This area is dominated by right wing radio and if you trying calling them on their one sided views, they either try to make you look dumb or just plain cut you off. They always have the last word and never let you finish any statement. So I have decided to call them out. I will be calling a local radio show today (Sept 22) and challenging the host, Eric Von Wade, ( www.ericvonwade.com ) to a debate on the issues (Visit his site to see what kind of person here is). My bet is that he will either brush it off or just say no. He has all the advantages. All I have on my side is the truth. That's all I need.
I have started up a new blog site for my political views and I invite you to join me in expressing yours there as well. I will not censor you or make fun of your views but instead talk about them.
I call this new blog site "Given To Speak". Please subscribe to it at: www.giventospeak.blogspot.com
Thanks

Hey guys,
Just wanted to update you on some things.
First things first, I have added an email subscription box to the right so that so you can receive emails everytime I update my blog.
Second, about the Skypecast, as some of you may have noticed, we had one planned for one before the show but I couldn't get to my PC in time. I was coming in from out-of-town and got home late. I will be trying to schedule one in a few days. Let me know if you have any suggestions for topics to discuss.
Third, from what I hear, Pearl Jam torn it up at Bonnaroo on Sat. night, doing an almost 3 hour set. It seems that this pissed off "king" Kanye and supposedly caused him to perform at 4:30am!!! It seems that he wanted to perform on the main stage so that he could do his 'Glow in the dark " show. What an ass!!! Everytime I want to like this guys, he does something stupid like this. But I digress... Hear more about this story on the next podcast.
Lastly, I wanted to let you guys know that I will have purchased The Bonnaroo bootleg. I am willing to trade with someone that is buying another show so that I can use on the podcast. If you are interested in helping out the show, email me at: mario@giventocast.com
BTW, working on the next show. It should be up by end of week. Thanks

I am trying to get back to this...
He guys,
I wanted to let you guys know that I am working on some things and I will get another podcast up very soon. I have been very busy with family, work and other things that consume our lives and I'm finding it harder to buy gas to get around to do them.
Gone forever are the days of 59 cents a gallon. The price it cost to fill up my go-cart and drive it around an empty parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. Now, if I still had that go-cart, I would be paying $ 3.49 a gallon to ride that around.
I am so glad there is someone running for president that understands this and isn't afraid to tell the American people the truth, instead of pandering to them and promising little more than a band-aid solution for an on going problem. Take a look at this video and see why I am voting for this man.
Stay Tuned, we'll be back!!!!

Bill Clinton urges you to choose HOPE..
Hey guys,
Been totally swamped lately and I know I promised to get this blog going again but I have been way too busy with work, family and just life. I am going to start this someday, maybe when they start touring again, I'll bring this back. For now, I'm going to focus on using any free time I may have to campaigning for Barack Obama.
Being a Texan, I got my turn at voting AND caucusing last night. Though we didn't do well in our precinct, he did much better in the cities and areas around Houston and Dallas. As for the popular vote, we just missed it. Pretty good though for someone that was 20 point underdog last month. Just ran outta time.
In any event, it's over. I'm beat after standing out side my polling place in Corpus. But I wanted to let you guys know that if you live in Pennsylvania or any other state that will vote in the next few weeks, get involved and help Barack wrap this up in April.
I found this clip of Bill Clintion praising John Kerry in 2004 when he campaigned for him. Listen to what he says and ask yourself this question, "How can he sing the praises of John Kerry about how he inspires "hope"? With that logic you should vote for Obama, right?
Anyway here's the clip:
TRANSCRIPT: Now, one of Clinton Laws of Politics is this: "If one candidate is trying to scare you and one candiate is trying to get you to think, if one cadidate is appealing to your fears and the other is appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the one that wants you to think and hope. That's the best."

AT&T: It was a mistake??!!! Yeah, right!
Hey guys,
Just wanted to put my 2 cents in about what AT&T admits was "a mistake" by the monitor of the Lollapalooza webcast.
If you haven't heard, during the webcast of Pearl Jam's set this past weekend, AT&T took it upon itself, at least this "monitor" did, to censor Ed and the band from their opinions of George Bush. Now, if you guys know me, this is a big issue with me, censorship and this "president".
This is what you should've heard:
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking, "It was just a few seconds. It wasn't that bad." Well, I beg to differ. If we allow big corporations to censor what we say, in any way whatsoever, we are setting a precedence that could allow them to censor our phone calls, blogs or any other free speech protected by the constitution. If you noticed that as soon as they we called out by the band, AT&T immediately issued a statement.
"The editing of the Pearl Jam performance on Sunday night was a serious mistake made by a Webcast vendor and completely contrary to our policy," AT&T's statement said. "We have policies in place with respect to editing excessive profanity, but AT&T does not edit or censor performances. We have that policy in place because the Blue Room is not age-restricted."
I think AT&T needs to go further than just issuing a statement. I don't even think they apologized for it. They just say it isn't their policy to censor artists. They need to fire their vendor.
This isn't the first time the AT&T has done this. They did the same thing on the webcasts from Bonnaroo in June during the John Butler Trio show when he was talking about the lack of response from our government during Katrina, and also during the Flaming Lips show when the lead singer was talking about how much George Bush had screwed up. I saw the webcasts. The sound did not cut out at any other time - only when someone was talking about George Bush or the goverment in a negative way.
I think it's time for us to let AT&T know that we won't tolerate this from them or any other big corporation. As of yesterday, I have decided to cancel my home phone and internet service I have with AT&T. I have had their service for over a year now so I won't incur any penalties. When asked by the rep. why I was canceling my service, I ,at first, said it was personal reasons. She kept on asking in different ways, why I was cancelling. After taking a deep breath, I told her I can not in good conscience continue giving my hard earned money to a company that believes in censorship. She quickly retorted that they don't. Then I told her the story about the show and that this wasn't a one-time incident. To her credit, she heard me out but said she knew nothing about what I was telling her and that it was news to her. I suggested she look into it for herself but that I had already made my decision to cancel. She went ahead and did just that for me and apologized for what "I felt" happened.
So, I challenge all you PJ fans and others to take a stand like I did. If you use AT&T, stop using them. They will get the message.
Peace!

Sorry for going M.I.A. but...
Hey guys,
Sorry for going M.I.A. in the middle of the 3 part series on the The Gorge Box Set but it couldn't be helped.
On July 12, I lost a good and old friend of mine. It was a shock to hear the news. I dropped everything and went to be with his parents. They are taking it the hardest.
He was an only child and a father of three boys and loving husband. We grew up together as kids and there wasn't a weekend that went by that we didn't sleep over at each other's houses. But as the years past, we grew apart and found other friends but we would see each other at least 4 or 5 times a year on holidays.
I had visited with his mother the week before his death and asked how he was doing. She let me know that he had been kinda down lately. It seems he had been unhappy about living 2 hours away from his parents and the job he had was less than he envisioned for himself.
I should've called him. I should've been there for him. But life got in the way and I missed my chance.
He came home to visit his parents that week. I think it made him feel happy being home. On July 11th, sometime that night, he took a handful of prescription medicine from his mother's cabinet and never woke up.
As a person of faith, it goes against my belief to take your life and I have been wrestling with this in my mind for these past weeks. Anger at him and myself. Sadness and tears at his funeral. The realization that he's gone.
If you know of anyone that is depressed, don't ignore it or put off speaking with them. Your voice and ears could be what puts their minds at ease. Get them some help or just be there for them.
The next podcast is dedicated to him.
Alex, we miss you!!!
